Music Friday: Toy Boy

by on Aug.20, 2010, under Music

This is a strange little song; fanciful, funny, slightly creepy…

Can’t recall exactly what lead me to this song, but I found it on Pandora or Last.fm… Mika is a singer/songwriter from the UK. As usual, you can get the mp3 from Amazon.

Music Friday: Alestorm – Leviathan

by on Aug.06, 2010, under Music

I’ve always been a fan of ninjas over pirates, but I haven’t yet found any ninja metal…

Alestorm describe themselves as “True Scottish Pirate Metal,” and they certainly live up to the moniker. Relatively clear vocals, great pirate-themed lyrics, and metal with a distinct “sea shanty” quality all combine into quite the pleasurable experience. You can get an mp3 of Leviathan from Amazon for $0.99.

Music Friday: The Touch

by on Jul.16, 2010, under Music

If you’re anything like me, the moment you hear the first couple seconds of this song you get a stupid grin on your face that won’t go away.

The Touch, by one-hit-wonder Stan Bush, is available as an mp3 on Amazon.

Fun fact: According to Wikipedia,

Bush submitted a rerecorded version of the song from his album “In This Life” for the 2007 live action Transformers film, but it was not included on the final soundtrack.

Talk about a damn shame. This would have been the perfect song for Bumblebee to play while whatshisface was in the car with genericloveinterest.

Music Friday: They’re Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!

by on Jul.09, 2010, under Music

I’m sad to say I’d never heard of Dr. Demento until a Slashdot article about his radio show leaving the airwaves, but that lead me to search Youtube and find a huge wealth of amazing songs like…

The song is from 1966, by Napoleon XIV.

Music Friday: First of May (NSFW)

by on Jul.02, 2010, under Music

Warning: This music video is  not safe for work!

Found this amazing WoW music video set to Jonathan Coulton’s First of May.

If you’re not familiar with Joanathan Coulton… well, you’re not a very good geek. He first appeared on my radar for the catchy tune at the end of Portal, Still Alive. You can get the MP3 of First of May, and all his other songs, from his website for $1.

Also want to give some props to the maker of this hilarious machinima, Mike Spiff, whose made a name for himself making WoW music videos based on JoCo songs.

Music Friday: Welcome to the Deadmines

by on Jun.25, 2010, under Music

Today’s song is a treat for anyone who loves World of Wacraft or Disney movies. It’s a Disney-styled song set in the Deadmines.

The tune is great, the lyrics and singing are a bit shaky, but the video is a masterwork of machinima and the guy who made it is only 17 years old. The MP3 is available for free, there’s a link in the video’s summary on YouTube.

Music Friday: Cheech Marin – Red and Blue and Yellow Too

by on Jun.18, 2010, under Music

Heard this on WERS’s kids’ music show, The Playground.

Sorry for the weirdness of today’s post. This is the only place I could find with this song which allowed me to embed it, and as far as I can tell the embedding doesn’t work in Firefox, which makes me a sad panda. That said, Firefox users like myself and others for whom the embed doesn’t work can click the link and listen to it on the original web page.
This track is from Cheech Marin’s children’s album, Cheech the Schoolbus Driver. The MP3 of the song is available on Amazon.

Music Friday: Lissie – Bad Romance (cover)

by on Jun.11, 2010, under Music

A cover today, I thought this was an interesting spin on the song. It actually sounds a bit more crazed and desperate than than the original, which I think works for it…

Lissie lists their influences as pie, cigarettes, porches, corn hole, and waiting in line. Near as I can tell this cover of Bad Romance isn’t for sale, but they do have an EP for $8 CD/$11 vinyl.

Music Friday: Special Nerdcore Ladies’ Night

by on Jun.04, 2010, under Music

Here’s a three pack of nerdcore artists waxing philosophic over their own favorite types of ladies.

First up, we have Schaffer the Darklord with Nerd Lust. If you want to skip the patter, the song starts around 1:20.

Next, MC Frontalot’s awesome rap ballad, Goth Girls.

Finally, we have MC Lars with the slightly less flattering Hipster Girl.
